As part of the <b>Prairie Rose Publications Third Birthday Bash</b>, they've released a bunch of new novellas, including <b><a href="http://amzn.com/B01JXTDRTO" target="_blank" title="I Heard the Brides on Christmas Day by Jacquie Rogers">I Heard the Brides on Christmas Day</a></b>. You can win your choice of two of these new releases at the <a href="http://prairierosepublications.blogspot.com/2016/08/the-bride-is-in-mail-and-birthday.html" target="_blank" title="Prairie Rose Publications blog">Prairie Rose Publications blog</a>.<br />
<br />
<b>About the story:</b><br />
The Murdock brothers have a fine ranch in Owyhee County, Idaho. The only things missing are wives and kids, so Hec orders a couple of brides for Christmas. The catch is, woman-shy Zeke doesn't know about it. Dinah and Stella have a plan— If the grooms don’t work out, they’ll start a restaurant. Farm chores are hard enough, but a peckish chicken and a raging blizzard don’t help matters. Can Hec and Zeke capture their hearts?<br />
<br />
<b>How it came about:</b><br />
I love Christmas stories all year around. Christmas and romance go together so well, because it's the season for giving, sharing, and loving.<br />
<br />
So what would the ultimate gift be that a man could give his brother? Lifelong happiness with the woman of his dreams. That's how I came up with the idea that Hec Murdock could order Christmas brides for himself and his brother.<br />
<br />
And what happens when two city women end up in remote Owyhee County in Idaho Territory? What if they had to do farm chores? They'd have no idea how to go about it. Well, Dinah and Stella are in that boat, but if nothing else, they're determined to make a life for themselves in the West, whether it's with the Murdock brothers or on their own.<br />
<br />
I grew up on a farm so I actually have done all these chores, but many readers have asked how to go about them, so here it is right here in this novella. I had a lot of fun thinking of things that could go wrong.<br />
<br />
<b>Hearts of Owyhee series</b><br />
All the Hearts of Owyhee novels and novellas are set in Owyhee County, Idaho Territory. "Owyhee" is the original anglicized spelling of Hawaii, and the area was named after some fur trappers from the Sandwich Islands were lost there in 1819.<br />

Or is she? Lady Pearl Montford has performed in theatres all over the West for crowds of all sizes, but what would the world say if her secret was found out—that she's really plain old Pearl Jane Evans from Kentucky. To make matters worse, Pearl's past life as a professional trick rider is floating to the surface thanks to an unsavory suitor from her past who wants either her—or $10,000. </div>

<b>A Frustrated Rancher</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rugged Josh McKinnon has a ranch to build and blooded horses due in any day, but there's one problem standing between him and his dream—Lady Montford, a high-falutin' diva actress. Wrangled into playing opposite the snooty Brit in Shakespeare's ‘Much Ado about Nothing,’ Josh has to put his ranch on hold and put up with her nonsense for two weeks. Only thing is—how can he focus on his ranch when all he can think about is the way Pearl sits a horse? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Much Ado About ... Love?</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With a slew of critters causing stirs left and right, meddling family members and townsfolk playing cupid, and horse rustlers causing a ruckus, Pearl and Josh have a heck of a time keeping their minds on the play and their hands off each other. When the dust settles and the curtain falls, will Pearl and Josh be able to overcome the odds working against them and find love in the wild Idaho countryside?</div>

It's here! The second story in the Muleskinners series took a while, partly because I got caught up in a bunch of other projects and partly because of the publisher's schedule.</div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">What's it about?</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Elsie Parry aims to get this load of salt delivered to Kearney, Nebraska, come hell or high water. Or outlaws. Or Indians. Her other driver, Hank, and her former outlaw brother Zeb will help – but her eight draft mules (who think they are Greek gods) will make the difference. If she can keep them from being stolen – or eaten.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The inside scoop</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Civil War wasn't kind to Elsie, her family, her home, or her neighbors. In 1863, border ruffians abducted her brother, Zeb, along with the neighbor boy, Hank, from the family farm in Missouri. The next year, more came – she didn't know which side – and burned the farm to the ground. Elsie was given responsibility for eight draft mule foals and sent to live on a forested hill out of harm's way. She had little contact with the outside world, but her father visited infrequently.</div>
<br />
She learned her mother had passed away, whether from sickness or hunger, Elsie didn't know, and neither did her father. In fact, he disappeared the last year of the war and Elsie thought he was dead, too, but imagine her elation to find him alive and relatively well five years later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.featurepics.com/FI/Thumb300/20061112/Draft-Mule-Team-137937.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.featurepics.com/FI/Thumb300/20061112/Draft-Mule-Team-137937.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meantime, those eight mules were her only friends and she'd named them after the Greek gods in her mother's book: <span style="text-align: justify;">Hermes, Zeus, Poseidon, Hephaestus, Aries, Apollo, Hades, and Plato (who's not a god but he's quite the thinker).</span> They have a good rapport, and she's very protective of them. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her papa was born with the gift of blarney, and he's a lot better at making deals than actually coming through with them. Still, he's her father and she loves him dearly – her only family other than the mules.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The underlying theme of the Muleskinners series is undoing the emotional damage that the war caused. It tore her family apart--killed some of them, and scarred the rest. But Elsie doesn't let these things get her down. She's determined, bold, and can be a little hard-nosed at times. She's also compassionate and has a wicked sense of humor.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Part of her character is patterned after my late aunt, who could get just about any animal to do whatever she asked of them. Some people have it--most don't. My aunt had it and so does Elsie. My aunt also lived by her beliefs--right, wrong, or Bisquik. Elsie has that trait, too, super-sized. She also has a lot of other traits that my aunt didn't have. Elsie is, bein's she's a fictional character, larger than life.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The series</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yes, you're better off reading <b>Muleskinners #1: <a href="http://amzn.com/B00LMC6RS4" target="_blank">Judge Not</a></b> first because this is a true sequential series. <b>Judge Not</b> is the first leg of her journey, so while <b>No Small Tempest</b> could be read as a stand-alone, you'd get a lot more out it if you've read the first one.</div>

About the cover model. Or not. We simply couldn't find any photos that worked for Elsie. The one we chose was the least worst, so you'll see the same picture on the next three stories, and she'll be wearing the same thing unless we can find something else. Despite that, I thought <b><a href="http://judgeyourbookbyitscover.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Karen M. Nutt</a></b> did a great job with the cover. Thanks, Karen!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'd also like to thank <a href="http://www.troyduanesmith.com/" target="_blank"><b>Troy Smith</b></a> who got me into this mess in the first place. He told me I could write a story for the Wolf Creek series and I did--but used my own cast instead of the Wolf Creek characters as he intended. Through that misunderstanding, this series was born, and now he, at the helm of Western Trail Blazer, is publishing it. Go figger. </div>

May your saddle never slip.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rancher Cole Richards rescues his friend from robbing a bank, but is shot for his efforts, and now is a wanted man. His friend takes him to Oreana to see the doc, but Cole's mistaken for the new marshal!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Daisy Gardner is obsessed with solving crimes just like dime novel heroine Honey Beaulieu. But Daisy's parents insist she marry a farmer. Problem is, she can't be a detective if she's stuck miles from town. What better solution than to marry the new marshal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now Cole faces a dilemma few men have to face—tell the truth and hang, or live a lie and end up married. Either way could cost him his freedom.</div>

<b><span style="color: red;">5 stars from romantchick:</span></b> Nancy Drew meets William Shakespeare ...hilarious characters, memorable colloquialisms, a clever, engaging plot and fine writing. Welcome to 1880s Owyhee County, Idaho Territory! It was a hoppin' place in those days, and I've brought you several fictional adventures, both novels and short stories. There are currently four books (I'm working on the fifth), and since the rights have reverted to me, I've re-edited them, changed the covers, and am slowly getting them reissued. They've never been available on other online stores, just Amazon. They're back up on Amazon, and now I'm working to get them on Kobo, Apple, and BN. <br />
<br />
Here's the first book of the series (which was released second before), and it's FREE Jan. 9, 2015 <b>only</b>. If you miss the free day, it's only 99¢ until Jan. 12.</div>

<b>RTW: Jane, tell us about <a href="http://amzn.com/B00OEFC9LK" target="_blank">Jake and Ivy</a>, please.</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>JLQ</b>: Ivy Westlake, thought to be a demure young lady, comes alive at her friend’s hacienda in Mexico when she discovers the Flamenco. Her wild side is unleashed in the sensuality of music and dancing. She will not allow her father to force her into a marriage of convenience back East, so she runs away with the dance troupe.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Jake Agee, cowboy, horse trader, loner, has carefully built a life with no commitments. That life explodes in his face when Ivy dances. He doesn’t know she’s run away until he spots her performing in a small California town. He battles his desire to have this woman against his well-honed sense of independence.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Jake and Ivy perform their own style of <i>pas de deux</i> throughout southern California until their passions ignite in a desert cave in the middle of a thunder storm. Jake fights his growing love as Ivy fights her craving for their erotic pursuits. Jake’s long lost brother suddenly and mysteriously surfaces. Will this appearance tear Jake and Ivy apart? Will it destroy their love?</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>JLQ</b>: Jake and Ivy have danced their own <i>pas de deux</i> throughout southern California, fighting their attraction, trying to keep their independence. Emotions are running high and a coming storm brings them together for the first time…</div>
<br />
<b style="color: #134f5c; font-size: x-large;">Excerpt</b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Slowly he stretched out an arm, his hand spread welcomingly wide.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her breath stopped in her chest. Her belly tightened. She didn't think he was just asking her to take a ride with him. In her short life, she'd never thought to feel this kind of desire for a man, hadn't known it even existed. He'd ridden out of nowhere. For her? He didn't say the words but she knew what he was asking. Come with him. The only possible response from her was yes. She shifted her glance in the direction of the town.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
His eyes narrowed. "It's close enough. They'll reach it before the storm hits."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Go, niña."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She heard Christina's whispered urging but had already made her decision. She stood, balancing on the wagon frame and placed her hand in his. He swung her over, settling her in front of him to straddle the horse, her skirts hitching up to her knees. His arm tightened around her middle as he wheeled sharply away.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her heart beat wildly recognizing the inevitability. It was what she'd been waiting for. He wanted her. She wanted him. It was as simple as that. Her body nestled into the shelter of his chest. His arms encircled her shoulders, one hand handling the reins, his open palm anchored over her belly. She twisted around to scrutinize him, her heart fluttering at his tender vulnerable neck, at the sight of the beating pulse pumping madly. Even his strong jaw shaded by light bristles looked arousing. Through lips slightly parted, little bursts of air coincided with the rise and fall of his chest as she leaned against it. Her eyes finally met his.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first installment of the Muleskinners series, <a href="http://amzn.com/B00LMC6RS4" target="_blank">Judge Not</a>, is now available. This is my first traditional western story and I hope you enjoy it. I really loved writing it, and four more stories are planned, the second installment will be released later this year. If you love strong women and stalwart men, give this novella a try!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Judge Not</b> was first printed in <b>Wolf Creek, Book 6: Hell on the Prairie</b>.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-size: large;">About <b>Judge Not</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Elsie Parry and her eight mules survived the war, but can they escape the wrath of the Danby Gang? She lived alone for five years after the Recent Unpleasantness and was overcome with happiness to be reunited with her father. Now, his fondest desire is to leave all the bad memories behind and see the Pacific Ocean, so she agreed to head west. All’s well until they approach Wolf Creek, where they’re set upon by the notorious gang of ex-Confederate guerrillas… intent on proving the war is not over, after all.</div>
<br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-size: large;">About Elsie</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Elsie's had a rough time of it.
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She learned her mother had passed away, whether from sickness or hunger, Elsie didn't know, and neither did her father. In fact, he disappeared the last year of the war and Elsie thought he was dead, too, but imagine her elation to find him alive and relatively well five years later. Meantime, those eight mules were her only friends and she'd named them after the Greek gods in her mother's book. They have a good communication, and she's very protective of them. Her father was born with the gift of blarney, and he's a lot better at making deals than actually coming through with them. Still, he's her father and she loves him dearly – her only family other than the mules.</div>

<br />
My pa wanted to see the Pacific Ocean. He’d flapped his lips all the way from Missouri to the middle of Kansas, and I reckoned by the time we did get to the ocean, I’d be ready to dunk him in it.<br />
<br />
“One of the mules is lagging.”<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Hermes,” I hollered. “Quit sniffing that bush and get over here.” Sure, my mules were coddled, but they’d been my only company for a year during the war, and the six years since, my best friends. “You know you’re supposed to stay by the wagon.”</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The mule sent me a guilty look and trotted to his spot by the rear wheel with the other three. I have eight mules, but a harness for only four, so four mules pulled half a day, then I traded them out.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Wouldn’t it be easier to tie the spare mules to the wagon, Elsie?” My father, Obadiah Parry, had lost his wife, son, home, and thought he’d lost me and the mules in the war, but he’d run into me a few years back. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Believe me, the moment I saw that man was the happiest day of my life. His brown hair had grayed and he’d hunched over and slowed down considerable, but his blue eyes still had that sparkle – the one that let you know there very well could be a frog in the sugar bowl, so watch out. I wouldn’t call him a moocher, but he did let me do the working while he did the talking.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Maybe, but I ain’t tying them up. They know their jobs.” Unlike Pa, who was more of a dreamer than a doer. The one dream he had that worked out was when he decided to start a draft mule business with a mammoth jack he’d won in a card game. He talked the local farmers who had quality draft horse mares into giving him one foal for every two breedings. The result was more than a dozen draft mule foals the next year, but then the war broke out.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now his dream was to go to California. I had eight of the mules, the wagon, nowhere else to go, and I was happy to make up for lost time with my pa. He had the gift of gab and a hefty dollop of charm, which got me more than one well-paying freight job. We had a light load this time, though – supplies for the trip west. But we had to take a detour to Wolf Creek to pick up a wagon he’d won playing euchre last week.</div>

<b><span style="color: #990000; font-size: x-large;">Cowboys Are My First Loves</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">by <a href="http://janeleopoldquinn.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jane Leopold Quinn</a></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sorry Paul (my husband), but I've always loved cowboys. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He always kids me about The Duke. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
John Wayne was the best!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was in love with the TV and movie cowboys of the '50s and '60s. So, when I first began writing romances, cowboys were the logical heroes. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although they weren't completely historically accurate, those old western shows are my main research "bible." But I do have quite a few books showing male and female clothing from different historic periods, as well as pioneer women's diaries, women who'd crossed the country in covered wagons. The women walked along side the wagons, cooked meals, washed clothing, looked after the children. Men rode horses and drove the wagons. To give them their due, the menfolk hunted for food but still on horseback. In their diaries, women didn't mention their periods or even childbirth. The most they'd say is that there was an addition to the wagon train. Life was difficult and lonely for many women in the west, but they had no choice but to continue moving one step forward, literally and figuratively. Thank God they did or most of us wouldn't be here.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first manuscript I wrote was The Long Road to You, and it starred a hero named Nick as an homage to the western, especially the TV western, The Big Valley. I was/am a Nick Barkley fan. That black outfit and especially the omnipresent black gloves were quite sexy. And in Nick's case, a black Stetson didn't make him the bad guy. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Around the same time, I was listening to an Andrea Bocelli CD, <i>Sogno</i>, and in particular the song, <i>'O Mare e Tu</i>. Its haunting minor chords, the Spanish/Arabic/Gypsy sounds put me in mind of the Flamenco. A young Anglo woman became my heroine, and she became the Flamenco dancer. You'd think a Mexican or Spanish woman would be the dancer, but I turned it around so the properly brought up and schooled American girl fell in love with the Flamenco, tried to break her bonds of propriety, and flee to escape the threat of an arranged marriage. Jake and Ivy came into being and is now the first book in the series, <i>The Brothers Agee</i>. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Flamenco is a sexy dance. The serious focused faces, rigid dance poses, minor chord sounds mesh with flying, tapping feet and gracefully waving arms. I used the music to portray Ivy's self-discovery of her sensual nature. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My hero Jake was inspired, in part, by an incident in my husband's youth. Jake and Nick were raised in an orphanage. Nick left when Jake was ten years old, and Jake became a loner — until he met Ivy. This in particular was not part of my husband's experience, but my heart ached for the young orphan boys. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A scene in Jake and Ivy takes place in <i>Barranca del Cobre</i>, Copper Canyon, in northern Mexico. Thank heavens for the internet, because it allows you to visit places you could never go to and get an idea of what they looked and felt like. That combined with my own experiences, of places I've traveled to and sights I've seen in person, really help in writing the scene. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What would a young woman in 1880 have known about men and sex? I don't think much since women were protected. The challenge is to take our modern 21st Century sensibility and write to an historical perspective. I don't believe an 1880s era young woman would speak a certain way, use particular words. This means I had to be aware of Ivy's innocent thoughts and dialogue and write them as realistically as possible.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I really like the challenge of subsuming myself in a character to see life as she/or he would. Especially in the male point of view. That's really a challenge! </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I introduced you to <a href="http://romancingthewest.blogspot.com/2014/08/meet-my-character-blog-tour-kmnbooks.html" target="_blank">Laura Dickerson</a> two weeks ago, and <a href="http://www.carolineclemmons.com/" target="_blank">Caroline Clemmons</a> introduced you to <a href="http://carolineclemmons.blogspot.com/2014/08/meet-my-character-blog-tour.html" target="_blank">Ellie Dickerson</a> last week. They're sisters, and Ellie has come to Texas as a mail-order bride. Laura, who's older, comes along.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now I’ll introduce you to the hero of <b>Mail-Order Ruckus</b>, a short western historical romance that is the second book in a duet with Caroline Clemmons, <a href="http://mailordertangle.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Mail-Order Tangle</a>, to be released in September.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1) What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Matt Johanssen</b>. He’s definitely fictional, a combination of many men I've known and admired. Matt is a year older than the hero of the first book, <b>Kage Johanssen</b>, his cousin.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>2) When and where is the story set? </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1880-1881, first in Texas and then in Owyhee County, Idaho Territory.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvuOSlEqQTFmJIKof7Ms6bnmBe8dIo8PGk2Ulqb3aJQgb0eGqepkd6XDA1fb3-E3LyYesM_ymrnMyqK0sgv-1k6B6xMQJIqfpkCMkCsnxqt9xLPz7DSUc8SgJ0cbb-Kzi_YFFlCS66Bgo/s1600/IMG_1573.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvuOSlEqQTFmJIKof7Ms6bnmBe8dIo8PGk2Ulqb3aJQgb0eGqepkd6XDA1fb3-E3LyYesM_ymrnMyqK0sgv-1k6B6xMQJIqfpkCMkCsnxqt9xLPz7DSUc8SgJ0cbb-Kzi_YFFlCS66Bgo/s1600/IMG_1573.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>This is what Matt's ranch looks like in the spring when it's all nice and green.</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3) What should we know about him/her? </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Matt admires his Grandpa Bert (Adelbert Johanssen) and wants to achieve what his grandpa did—build a ranch despite the elements and other issues a ranchman faced. His word is his honor, and he holds to it. In Mail-Order Ruckus, Laura Dickerson shows up as a mail-order bride and unless he marries her, a man on the grooms roster will.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi084KDnMznsaoyJ3pthPJZ7SZ-Bn9TLSFYJTFScAbthn9VO8zZPW5fEjJ_EwX3NNUFXunt7ioDmtujPqBYGb6PFGjHcXU45DILPyOvqZzqv035y6vhDPD2zu3cSOXQrmYda1JEdo-7B40/s1600/FAAdurham-bull-1856-granger.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi084KDnMznsaoyJ3pthPJZ7SZ-Bn9TLSFYJTFScAbthn9VO8zZPW5fEjJ_EwX3NNUFXunt7ioDmtujPqBYGb6PFGjHcXU45DILPyOvqZzqv035y6vhDPD2zu3cSOXQrmYda1JEdo-7B40/s1600/FAAdurham-bull-1856-granger.jpg" height="338" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Matt's prize bull.</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>4) What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life? </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Matt is focused on his ranch and determined to make it a going concern. To do that, he’s invested every penny he has into it—he bought a blooded bull and after a harsh winter, 400 head of breeding cows. What money he makes has to go for wages, bills, and feed for both animals and crew. He has no money and no time to spend on a wife. Problem is, Laura, who he met and admired in Texas, comes to Silver City with a group of mail-order brides for a week of courting by men who’ve paid for the privilege of courting them. She has a week to pick a groom. And it can’t be him.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>5) What is the personal goal of the character?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Matt’s all about building the ranch to a self-sustaining operation just as his grandfather did in Texas.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>6) Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it? </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The title of the duet is <b>Mail-Order Tangle</b>. You can read more about both books in the duet at</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://mailordertangle.blogspot.com/">http://mailordertangle.blogspot.com</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We don’t have much on the site yet, but the cover’s posted and there’s a blurb for each book.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.carolineclemmons.com//carolyn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.carolineclemmons.com//carolyn.jpg" height="200" width="160" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Caroline Clemmons</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>7) When can we expect the book to be published?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We’re aiming for September 10. It’s an ambitious schedule and we have lots to do, but both Caroline and I are extremely excited for this release. It’s our first time working together, although we’ve been online friends for quite a while, and I’ve been a fangirl of Caroline’s long before that. So I’m tickled to be included in this book with her!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Caroline will be writing about her hero, <b>Kage Johanssen</b>, so check her <a href="http://carolineclemmons.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">blog </a>on the 21st!</div>

Welcome to the Meet My Character Blog Tour! My friend <b><a href="http://kmnbooks.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Karen M. Nutt</a></b> is the one who roped me in, and for that, I thank her. So before we get to my character, Laura Dickerson, I’d like give you the rundown on Karen (and isn’t that just the cutest dog?).</div>

<br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-size: large;"><b>Meet My Character</b></span><br />
<br />
Now I’ll introduce you to the heroine of <b>Mail-Order Ruckus</b>, a short western historical romance that will be included in a duet with <a href="http://www.carolineclemmons.com/" target="_blank">Caroline Clemmons</a>, <b><a href="http://mailordertangle.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Mail-Order Tangle</a></b>, to be released in September.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1) What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person? </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Laura Dickerson. She’s completely fictional, although I wouldn’t tell her that.</div>
<br />
<b>2) When and where is the story set? </b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1881-1882, first in Texas and then in Owyhee County, Idaho Territory.</div>
<br />
<b>3) What should we know about him/her? </b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Laura has always been a dreamer but she’s had to put her dreams aside to care for her younger, prettier sister. Their parents are deceased and the savings are gone, so now the two of them have to make do as best they can. Once her sister is situated, Laura is feeling a bit lost, so she decides to take her dreams out of the bag and make them happen.</div>
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">What Laura might be wearing<br />
when she arrives at Silver City</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>4) What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life? </b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The man of her dreams—actually, he’s more handsome than she’d ever dreamed—won’t ask for her hand in marriage because in his mind, an honorable man must make a good living before he offers for a woman. But she’s 24, going on 25, flirting with the edge of spinsterhood, so she has agreed to be a mail-order bride. Now she’s contractually bound to marry at the end of the week, but her dream man proves to be more stubborn than she ever could’ve thought.</div>
<br />
<b>5) What is the personal goal of the character? </b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Laura’s goal is clear—she wants a house to make into a home, and a husband and children to put into it.</div>
<br />
<b>6) Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it? </b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The title of the duet is <b>Mail-Order Tangle</b>. You can read more about both books in the duet at</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://mailordertangle.blogspot.com/">http://mailordertangle.blogspot.com</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We don’t have much on the site yet, but the cover’s posted and there’s a blurb for each book.</div>
<br />
<b>7) When can we expect the book to be published?</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We’re aiming for the first week in September.

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-size: large;">About <b>Judge Not</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-size: large;">About Elsie</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Elsie's had a rough time of it.
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Excerpt<br />
Muleskinners #1: Judge Not<br />
by Jacquie Rogers<br />
<i>Copyright 2013 Jacquie Rogers</i><br />
<br />
My pa wanted to see the Pacific Ocean. He’d flapped his lips all the way from Missouri to the middle of Kansas, and I reckoned by the time we did get to the ocean, I’d be ready to dunk him in it.<br />
<br />
“One of the mules is lagging.”<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Hermes,” I hollered. “Quit sniffing that bush and get over here.” Sure, my mules were coddled, but they’d been my only company for a year during the war, and the six years since, my best friends. “You know you’re supposed to stay by the wagon.”</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The mule sent me a guilty look and trotted to his spot by the rear wheel with the other three. I have eight mules, but a harness for only four, so four mules pulled half a day, then I traded them out.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Wouldn’t it be easier to tie the spare mules to the wagon, Elsie?” My father, Obadiah Parry, had lost his wife, son, home, and thought he’d lost me and the mules in the war, but he’d run into me a few years back. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">by <b>Ford Fargo</b></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This has got to be the most fun a writer can have! It's a Western Fictioneers collaborative novel, the brainchild of Troy Smith, who is also one of the authors (his characters are Marshal Sam Gardner and Charlie Blackfeather). We all write under the name of Ford Fargo. I have two characters, Abby Potter who isn't in this novel, and Gib Norwood. Actually, Gib is head of the Norwood family so I have the whole family. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When Troy put out the call for characters, I thought Wolf Creek needed some milk. I grew up on a dairy farm and one thing I know is milk cows. In fact, I know way too much about milk cows and that's why I live in the 'burbs. LOL. But one thing about dairymen, they work hard, lift lots of milk cans, bags of grain, and an occasional calf, so you can bet they'd be someone to stay away from in a fight. And that's how the Norwood Dairy happened--there's Gib, his half-brothers Peter and Paul who are octoroons, and their mother, Glory, who is Gib's half-aunt.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In <a href="http://amzn.com/B00LBTVW56" target="_blank"><b>Stand Proud</b></a>, the Norwoods are minding their own business, when the nasty bad guy, Andrew Rogers (um, no relation) uses the dairy as a decoy for his other objective, Matthias. So the Norwoods start off the book. I wrote chapters one and three.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This book has quite a line-up of authors. <b>Jory Sherman</b> is one of the most talented writers of today, a Pulitzer Prize nominee, and his chapter is a thing of beauty--nearly ripped my heart out. <b>Robert J. Randisi </b>is incredibly prolific and has written around 700 books to date--<b>good </b>books, too, so check them out. His chapter in <a href="http://amzn.com/B00LBTVW56" target="_blank"><b>Stand Proud</b></a> rocks. <b>Troy D. Smith</b> has won both the Peacemaker and the Spur awards--he's the glue that holds these novels together (if you haven't read his Blackwells series, do it! You won't be sorry.). <b>Jerry Guin</b> has contributions in several Wolf Creek books, and then... there's me! So here's the blurb:</div>
<br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;"><b>Welcome to Wolf Creek. </b></span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here you will find many of your favorite authors, working together as Ford Fargo to weave a complex and textured series of Old West adventures like no one has ever seen. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Greedy and ambitious cattle baron Andrew Rogers has caused a lot of trouble around Wolf Creek, intimidating farmers into selling out to him and hiring a small army of gunmen who have proven themselves capable of almost anything. But now he has set his sights on clearing out a whole town – Matthias, a hamlet near Wolf Creek settled by former slaves. Sheriff G. W. Satterlee has a plan to protect them… but it may be too late. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Today, Romancing The West welcomes western writer <b><span style="color: #990000;">Rod Thompson</span></b>, who has a brand spankin' new book out, <b><a href="http://amzn.com/B00K5POL32" target="_blank">The Saga of Jane Hicks</a></b>. First, he'll tell you a little about himself, and then RTW will ask him a few questions.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Rod Thompson</b>: 1889, the same year South Dakota became a state and the Dakota Territory as a whole ceased to exist, Greenberry (GB) and Eliza Ann Thompson, my grandparents, made the move from "Missoura" to "Dakota" in a covered wagon to homestead. In 1897, the same year Geronimo enlisted into the army as a scout, my father was born. I came along in 1938 and spent the first part of my life on a farm near a corner of the Rosebud Indian Reservation where my dad traded with local Indians and I rode a horse to an all-eight-grades-in-the-same-room school while learning to shoot at the age of eight. Later, when one of my brothers died six months after my mother, my dad called it quits on farming and the family broke up, but the Black Hills were always there, along with stories of Indian wars, legends of Deadwood, Buffalo Bill, Sitting Bull, Wild Bill Hickok, Casey Tibbs and rodeos. <br />
<br />

Near Sioux Falls, as a teenager, I looked down from a foot bridge into the Devil's Gulch that Jesse James is said to have jumped to escape the largest posse ever formed. My father loved telling stories and I loved to listen. Until he died at the age of 76, I sat at the feet of the master. For years, I dreamed dreams of inventions and made up poems, songs and kid's stories and submitted articles to magazines that were always rejected. When I finally decided to write a book at the age of 70, could it be anything but a western? When I began to write, I realized that all the time I had been listening to my father, I had been learning the lingo and facts of the end of an era. When I sent off my first book, "The Black Hills," I expected the usual rejection notice, but instead, much to my surprise, everyone seems to be loving it for which I'm extremely grateful.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNoqexCppOZ_kAfcABXAxQEHbv5CJHF9FhqWmXZ70cls_TyVnO5cfZRX4eH06BCGd5T9vzNFkrKpc_PVxsx-TIW_-ZwJxpWuhYaiMHcPS4V3SOadh4G2GF_j6SREOLGyryR4Tnf_Kf0L0/s1600/RodThompson-PeacemakerNominee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNoqexCppOZ_kAfcABXAxQEHbv5CJHF9FhqWmXZ70cls_TyVnO5cfZRX4eH06BCGd5T9vzNFkrKpc_PVxsx-TIW_-ZwJxpWuhYaiMHcPS4V3SOadh4G2GF_j6SREOLGyryR4Tnf_Kf0L0/s1600/RodThompson-PeacemakerNominee.jpg" height="153" width="200" /></a></div>
<b>RTW: What inspired these characters? Where do you see them going in the future?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Rod</b>: It is said that writers should write about what they know, I knew how to be a country boy. I spent the first years of my life on a small South Dakota farm. Country folks are good people, and I wanted my protagonist to be a typical Dakota farm boy with a strong moral compass; an honest, hardworking, God-fearing man with a sense of humor and loyalty whose life was shaped by the events in his life, as was the life of the one love his heart would allow him to have. That’s the way things were back before divorces were given out like popcorn. They took their wedding vows seriously. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He wasn’t born a superman with wonderful skills and a desire to save the world. His ideals, love of life, humor, and loyalty were given him by his parents. What skills he had, were developed through hard work, determination, and necessity, as were hers, and that is the thread that connects the thrilogy: two normal people of the time, separately together, struggling to find their way on the frontier and rising to each occasion. They did what needed to be done and were shaped by the doing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUdNrxOr8CF75rVE_YIlor2l_ElKYt2w57lVWfXsY_euDYudiwsEfnHkeYR7HxB4obobijS6lDRU0DGs35P1AxUMqJVfpVQUD-Amm2Uiy4hS6rdqQbeg_BKEEGiu8uobAbw1fwhpfIgbM/s1600/RodThompson-TheBlackHills.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUdNrxOr8CF75rVE_YIlor2l_ElKYt2w57lVWfXsY_euDYudiwsEfnHkeYR7HxB4obobijS6lDRU0DGs35P1AxUMqJVfpVQUD-Amm2Uiy4hS6rdqQbeg_BKEEGiu8uobAbw1fwhpfIgbM/s1600/RodThompson-TheBlackHills.jpg" height="320" width="248" /></a></div>
The characters meet in The Black Hills, get married and torn apart in The Saga of Jane Hicks, and I can’t wait to see what happens to them the third book of the thrilogy (not a misspelling).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>RTW: What do you think about the mixture of western and romance, and is there any romance in this book?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Rod</b>: Now that is perfect timing for this question. I love romance in the western, romance of the times, romance of the old west, romance between a boy and his horses, romance between a boy and girl—man and woman as long as it isn’t overdone. I’ll leave that to others. My agent first described The Black Hills as an Americana filled, humorous, western action epic and my editor at Berkley added, with a strong underlying love story. So yeah, I love romance and most readers say they like it and want to see what happens to them in the future. I pray I can continue to do it justice.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>RTW: What led you to become a writer?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Life…it was in me. Before television, movies, electronic games, and sports bars with 3000 television screens stole everyone’s imagination and creativity, people entertained each other with stories about their ancestors and travels and made up poems and songs and played fiddles, guitars and harmonicas.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge70QjvJ4JFP7BgNxsNPuTUXO7xT1ROGG-BLTgaQC5xDKWhuLBpuwP_HBmpqA1vcnX3rxL4m-SVoVwKN9uBDroDkX0rjwF_fuX95E4IjO66K7TcTOtcMTTwmPx1Q4AGNs6BwQfMLCwQgc/s1600/RodThompson.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge70QjvJ4JFP7BgNxsNPuTUXO7xT1ROGG-BLTgaQC5xDKWhuLBpuwP_HBmpqA1vcnX3rxL4m-SVoVwKN9uBDroDkX0rjwF_fuX95E4IjO66K7TcTOtcMTTwmPx1Q4AGNs6BwQfMLCwQgc/s1600/RodThompson.jpg" height="200" width="192" /></a></div>
My mother played piano, my father played fiddle and harmonica, and together they played at barn dances; and he also loved to tell stories, some of which were even true. He loved to tell them, and I loved to listen. For years I sat at the feet of the master. The desire to write was never about choice. It just was, and I am my father’s son.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>RTW: What authors have inspired you?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Rod</b>: My father read Zane Grey while my hero is L’Amour. A few readers have likened my writing to his, however, as fun as that is to think about, I am not now, nor will I ever be in his category. He was nothing short of amazing. Just being mentioned anywhere near him is good enough for me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>RTW: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Rod</b>: Write. And get two books released on the same day. My first book, <b>The Black Hills</b> was re-released by Penguin Berkley with a foreword written by James Drury, the star of “The Virginian” television series who called me to tell me it was the “best book of any kind he had read in years,” and thanks very much to an extra effort from Troy Smith, <b>The Saga of Jane Hicks</b> was released on the same day. What a blast. My daughter and draft editor, Rhonda, went out to dinner that night. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I would like to conclude by saying thank you to the many people who have taken the time to tell their friends about my book: Thank y’all.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Prairie Rose Publications</span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I’m so excited that I sloshed my Arbuckles all over my keyboard! <b><a href="http://amzn.com/B00KFFS2O6" target="_blank">Lassoing a Groom</a></b> was released today! I’m bouncin’ around like a goat kid on catnip to be included with five other talented authors in a new anthology from Prairie Rose Publications. Wait... I don’t think catnip does much to goats. No matter, since kids have springs in their hooves. The other five crazy hombres are: <b>Kirsten Lynn</b>, <b>Tracy Garrett</b>, <b>Kristy McCaffery</b>, <b>Linda Hubalek</b>, and <b>Kathleen Rice Adams</b>. If you knew these gals, you’d be as excited as I am— or runnin’ fer cover.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speaking of goats, Lady Jane Grey and Cleopatra horned their way into my story, “<b>Don’t Go Snaring My Heart</b>.” So did two dogs, Max and Minnie, a mule named Princess, and Jethro, the killer chicken. I have no idea how Jethro got in there, but he has his own ideas about things. Just don’t ruffle his feathers and you’re relatively safe.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What are these stories about? Just that—getting a husband bagged good and proper. My heroine, Betsy Lynch, doesn’t use a lasso. Her preferred method of catching men is a snare. Was she any good at it? Well, she was good enough to make into this anthology. But she wasn’t aiming for a husband. She did teach a lesson or two to some claim jumpers who wanted her silver mine, and it’s not her fault Dex Madsen came along at the wrong time. Or was it the right time?</div>
<br />
I have to say, every single story in <b><a href="http://amzn.com/B00KFFS2O6" target="_blank">Lassoing a Groom</a></b> is a good read—whether fun or dramatic, all are sigh-worthy. Here’s the blurb:<br />
<br />

<br />
How is a woman supposed to catch a husband? In the wild, wild west, she’s got to find a way to Lasso a Groom! Some of them are lawmen…some are outlaws. Ranchers and homesteaders are fair game, as well—none of 'em safe from love’s lariat, or the women who finally manage to rope ’em in!<br />

<br />
<strong>5 stars from LKGlover</strong>: <em>Need a break? This is a FUN book (seriously--when's the last time you read a laugh-out-loud book?)! Turn off the iphone, kick off yer boots (or Jimmy Choos) and let Jacquie Rogers provide that mini-vacation you KNOW you need!</em> <br />
<br />
Daisy Gardner wants to be a detective, just like her dime novel heroine, Honey Beaulieu. She does not want to be a farm wife, but that’s what her parents want. So what better solution to her dilemma than to marry the new marshal?<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cole Richards is honest, forthright, and stuck in a situation where he must lie and deceive or he and Bosco might end up as honored guests at a necktie party. That’s why he plays along with being the town marshal. He didn’t count going toe to toe with a lady detective who has marriage on her mind.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>5 stars from romantchick</b>: <em><strong>Nancy Drew meets William Shakespeare </strong>...hilarious characters, memorable colloquialisms, a clever, engaging plot and fine writing. All of which recommends Roger's Much Ado About Marshals as everything to do about a charming, well-written romp.</em> </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b></b><br />
<b>Overview: </b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A suffragist schoolteacher with a hidden past,</div>
<br />
<span style="text-align: justify;">Six shopworn whores cooking up plans for a better future,</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And a hunky cowhand who isn't quite sure what to do with all these women...</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Life isn't always comfortable at The Comfort Palace!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There’s nothing quite like growing up in Owyhee County, Idaho, to fuel a young girl’s imagination. I lived on a dairy farm six miles southwest of Homedale. Stories popped into my head while I was feeding calves, or hoeing beets, or shucking corn. These stories placed me in another time, wild and exciting, full of adventure, handsome heroes, and heinous villains.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At no point did I ever want to be a writer, though. Instead, my fondest dream was to be a baseball announcer in TV. Obviously, that didn't work out, nor did my second dream of becoming an interpreter at the United Nations. Instead, I've milked cows, ran a deli, managed political campaigns, managed offices, and owned a software consulting company, among other things. Nothing holds my interest for long.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Writing came as a fluke after I'd been sick and did nothing but read for a couple months. I dreamed a book, so I wrote it. Now I have several published novels in a couple sub-genres. Who knew?</div>

<b><span style="font-size: large;">Excerpt from Much Ado About Madams</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
by Jacquie Rogers</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dere Miss Sharpe,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The skool bord of Dickshooter, Idaho, dooly invits you . . .</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fannie clenched the pen with a death grip and pursed her lips as she drew her letters. The five scantily clad women standing around her watching every mark she made, didn’t help matters a bit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Fer hell’s sake, woman, quit thinking so hard and write the damn letter,” grumbled Trinket. But then, Trinket always grumbled about something.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The frustrated madam blew a stray lock of dye-pot red hair out of her eyes. “You girls don’t have to stand there like chickens ready to pounce on a snake. You’re making me nervous.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“You said you knew your letters,” accused Chrissy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Leave me alone. I went all the way to third grade, and I writ the ad fer the newspaper, didn’t I?”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Yeah, but the newspaper man probably fixed it up some.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Can I make the letters on the envelope?” whispered Holly, who’d nearly been strangled by a no-good drifter the week before. She still couldn’t talk right. The bouncer had run the worm out at gunpoint and told him never to come back. Fannie had taken a liking to Holly, a young girl who, even though she served drinks in a whorehouse, was ignorant about the ways of the world—a lot like Fannie had been when her old man threw her out of his house so many years ago.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fannie tapped the spare piece of precious paper lying on the desk. “You can practice on this once I’ve finished here.” That is, if she didn’t mess up this paper, she thought, and she probably would if she didn’t get some peace and quiet.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“This ain’t gonna work, anyway,” Trinket walked across the room, swaying her hips seductively out of years of habit. “What decent schoolmarm would teach a bunch of whores their letters? And how do you know she’ll marry Reese? Hell, he owns a whorehouse!”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fannie couldn’t imagine a woman who wouldn’t want him. “Reese is a fine, upstanding man, and handsome as sin. She won’t be able to resist, and she’ll force him to close up shop so we can be on our way to new lives.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“What if she’s some pinch-nosed Bible-thumper?” argued Trinket.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“If she’s ugly, Reese might not want her, but even if she tries to save our souls, at least we’ll all learn reading and writing to help get ourselves a respectable living. We can’t lose.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Felicia sniffed. “Ha! We’re already losers, or we wouldn’t be stuck in this hellhole.” She’d whored in the best brothels in New Orleans until a crazy man had cut her face up.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fannie tried to sympathize, but damn, why’d Felicia have to be so uppity? Fannie ignored her remark, like she always did. She’d have thrown Felicia out on her nose a long time ago, but knew no place else would take her.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Once the mines up in Silver City bring in more customers, no decent businessman would shut this place down,” Felicia added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fannie thunked the pen down on the desk, ink splattering clear to the wall. She had to get these women out of the office or she’d never get this letter written. They had a plan, and it was up to her to make it work, but she sure as hell couldn’t do it with all these women pecking at her like a bunch of vultures. “Fer gawd’s sake, Petunia, take a bath! You stink like a bucket of last week’s slop.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Aw, Fannie, I just had a bath last Sunday.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Like I said, last week’s slop. Now, go!” Petunia left the office, mumbling all the way out the door.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fannie turned to Felicia. “Go get your room ready before the gents come a calling. It always looks like a pigsty. I want the sheets changed and your butter dish cleaned.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Humph! Sadie should do that.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Honey, you’re not in some fancy New Orleans whorehouse any more. You have to do fer yourself.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Two gone, three to go. “Chrissy, help Sadie with dinner.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chrissy jammed one hand on her hip and patted her tousled auburn hair with the other. “I ain’t no cook.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“You are today.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It ain’t my turn. Besides, it’ll roughen my hands.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Your hands have been through worse.” Fannie waved toward the door. “Go on, now.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She pulled a bottle of black dye from her desk drawer. “Trinket, your blonde roots are showing something fierce. Take care of it.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“But the men will be coming in a few hours, and my hair won’t be dry.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Go stand in the sun. If you ever went outside, you’d know the sun’s shining today.” She handed Trinket the bottle. “If any of your callers come early, I’ll hold ‘em off for an hour.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Holly whispered, “Do you want to get rid of me, too?”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fannie didn’t, but the other girls would throw a fit if she let Holly stay. “Do some mending or something. Come back here in half an hour and I’ll let you make some letters.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Yes, ma’am.” She paused at the door. “Will I be serving drinks tonight?”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It’s time. You’ve had a week off.” Fannie didn’t have the heart to make Holly take gents to her bed. The other girls grew more resentful all the time, but she doubted that Holly had ever had a man—and once she did, there was no going back.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The last of the girls finally gone, Fannie finished the letter.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Are you ready for spring? I dodged through sleet to get to yoga class today. Enough already! It's time for warm weather, azaleas, and the breeze carrying the aroma of outdoor-grilled steak. Sara Walter Ellwood thought so, too, so she fired up the <a href="http://cowboycharm.blogspot.com/2014/01/springtime-in-country-blog-hop.html" target="_blank">Springtime in the Country Blog Hop</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
March and April are entirely unpredictable weather months in the area where the <a href="http://www.jacquierogers.com/hoo.html" target="_blank">Hearts of Owyhee</a> series is set. I grew up there (Owyhee County, Idaho), and I remember a day where it was so warm, we dressed in shorts and tanktops. On the way to a library meeting, we had the AC turned on high in the car. </div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0J5S9quErw_I6Sl7iLc4uZWd45R6ePNBXOEL9XINqhDLphm3G4Z3iRn29zGaKIKDWSsJn2dMImWNEDLSaz-Is6F9ALaDMFbq-0F0BJU_CviBUb4beLe0qdUcrpyCjGA60XBnn6Xq_5Rw/s1600/RTW_BlogBackground_GraveyardPoint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0J5S9quErw_I6Sl7iLc4uZWd45R6ePNBXOEL9XINqhDLphm3G4Z3iRn29zGaKIKDWSsJn2dMImWNEDLSaz-Is6F9ALaDMFbq-0F0BJU_CviBUb4beLe0qdUcrpyCjGA60XBnn6Xq_5Rw/s1600/RTW_BlogBackground_GraveyardPoint.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Springtime at Graveyard Point, Owyhee County</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then the lightning flashed, and the rain sprinkled but soon turned into sleet, then snow. We switched off the AC and turned the heater on full blast. By the time we got where we were going, four inches of snow had fallen and we were freezing. The windshield wipers stuck to the glass. Our flip-flops froze to our feet as we dashed into the building.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
An hour later, our meeting had ended and we dreaded walking the fifty yards to the car, but when we went outside, the sun shined bright and hot, every flake of snow had melted, and the birds chirped happily.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That is springtime in Owyhee County.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, can you imagine negotiating that erratic weather 150 years ago? You'd have to be prepared for any weather because there were no cars with either AC or heaters. Plus, you've gotta feel sorry for the poor horses pulling the wagon.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Luckily for my characters, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://amzn.com/B00HGUD17G" target="_blank">Much Ado About Miners</a></span> is set in the summer months. It's hot in the morning, hotter in the afternoon, and hot in the evening. Seldom is there any precipitation of any kind. No slickers or muffs needed. I'm sure they'd have loved some air conditioning, though.</div>

I like adventures and so does the heroine, Iris. Well, she got one. :) Think she can resist Kade McKinnon's charm? Ha!</div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">About <b>Much Ado About Miners</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"><b>Cupid’s bullet</b>... </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hired gun Kade McKinnon interrupts a bank holdup and is shot by the teller, Iris Gardner, whose victims have a tendency to be the next groom in town. Will he be the groom this time? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"><b>Cupid’s bow</b>... </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Iris Gardner, a smart, independent bank clerk, fell in love with Kade when she was too young to know better. So when he walks back into her life and her bank, it's only fitting that she shoots him ... by accident, of course. But she’s a suffragist now, so his charms can’t affect her... right? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"><b>Cupid’s blindfold</b>... </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Kade doesn’t know Iris’s company is the one who hired him to escort a bullion shipment, and Iris doesn’t know Kade owns the security company, but they both know robbers are on their trail. Which is more likely to be stolen—the silver, or his heart?</div>

Romancing the West's guest today hales from Down Under but writes stories set in the American Old West. She's a generous person, a friend, and a talented writer. Thanks for joining us today, <b>Susan Horsnell</b>! Susan ramrodded the <b><a href="http://amzn.com/B00IRPWDNM" target="_blank">Rawhide 'n Roses</a></b> anthology, a collection of 2,000-word stories from 15 authors, herself included. It's a sampler, really--a way to get a taste of new-to-you authors' writings. You'll read about her writing journey and her stories today.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">About Susan</span><br />
I was a nurse, a career that spanned more than 35 years. During my career I specialised in caring for people with Alzheimer’s type Dementia, an area that fascinates me despite how heartbreaking it can be. My dear father-in-law is unfortunately afflicted with this disease and now resides in a Nursing Home. In the not too distant future I am hoping to pen a novel incorporating some of the stories I have heard from these amazing people. Part of my career was with the blind and I also cared for severely disabled children for a while too. </div>

From there I just hoped my stories were interesting and well written enough to attract readers. <br />
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am married to the love of my life, we have two wonderful adult boys, and five amazing grandchildren. We also play substitute Mum and Dad to a beautiful, adopted young lady. We reside in sunny Qld, Australia in the midst of a Blackbutt Forest. We are surrounded by the peace and quiet of Mother Nature and wildlife abounds. It is a dream come true location for us. </div>

Each story in the anthology is a showcase of the author’s individual writing style and will hopefully encourage the reader to purchase full length novels of the authors they like. Every story will have a Western Romance theme but there will be everything from old west romance to time travel and contemporary. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Something to suit every western reader’s taste. It will also give the reader an opportunity to discover some new authors. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am privileged to be associated with the very best of western writers and I know readers are going to be very impressed by the high quality of this work. The anthology came about from a comment I inadvertently made on a Western Romance Writer’s forum. From this comment the idea snowballed and I found myself nominated in charge of pushing the project forward. I cannot believe I am in such esteemed company and I am very grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented authors. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The authors will be blog hopping to promote this anthology and their own work. I hope readers will keep an eye out on blogs and social media now that the book has been officially released.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best part? The culmination of this hard work by so many talented people – The Anthology – will be a steal at just $2.99!</div>

</b> <b><span style="font-size: large;">Petticoat Patrol</span></b><br />
by <b>Susan Horsnell</b><br />
<b><br />
</b> <br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Sissy, for heaven’s sake. Stop that damn wagon!” Lily screeched at the top of her voice. She crouched low over her galloping mare’s neck, reins in one hand and mane grasped in the other. As she drew alongside the wagon, which carried her sisters, she stood up in the stirrups and yelled again. “Stop that wagon now or so help me…”</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Melissa, also known as Sissy, pushed her feet down hard to balance as she pulled back hard on the bay gelding’s reins. They all drew to a stop.</div>

Lily lifted the hat from her head and swiped impatiently at the sweat on her brow. It was so hot she thought, if the damn dog was chasing the cat, they’d both be walking. “Why didn’t you stop when I called out?” </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“How am I supposed to hear you with the sound of Buck’s hooves and these two tittering in my ear?” Sissy retorted. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The ‘two’ she referred to, as she flung her arm in the air, were their sixteen year old twin sisters – Amy and Emily. They had just discovered the appeal of two local boys and had been excitedly chattering.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Why are you here, anyways? You’re supposed to be helpin’ Ma put a basket of food together. We gotta spend the night out with Pa watchin’ for rustlers and you know we get hungry.” Sissy pouted. She hated it when she thought her big sister was sent to watch over her. At eighteen years old she felt she was more than capable of doing things without being ‘chaperoned’.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Ma sent me because she forgot a couple of things when she wrote out the list. It’s taken me all this time to catch up with you.”</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“What else does she need?” Sissy enquired. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lily pulled the list from her pocket and thrust it into her sister’s hand. “I might as well come with you now. It’s only another mile to town and I can help with the supplies.” </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sissy nodded before slapping the reins to get the big gelding moving. Lily urged her mount forward and they began walking at a leisurely pace. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They were in sight of town when a loud crack heralded something had gone terribly wrong on the wagon. Sissy brought Buck to a stop and glanced at her older sister in despair. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As Lily dismounted, the other girls jumped from the wagon. While the older two checked on the suspect wheel, Amy and Emily hovered nervously.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lily crouched down and shook the wheel. It was looser than a whore in a cathouse. “Almost snapped clean off the axle,” she grumbled as she pushed herself to stand. “Sissy, unhitch Buck and we’ll walk the rest of the way. I’ll drop the horses at the livery and see what I can do about getting it fixed while you pick up the supplies.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sissy did as requested and the girls began the short trek to town.</div>
