Found Hearts
a short story in

Nine days—nine stories from nine veteran western historical romance authors
Just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Romancing The West welcomes the first person ever booked here, Cheryl Pierson.  Cheryl was born in Duncan, Oklahoma, and grew up in Seminole, Oklahoma. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma, and holds a B.A. in English. Cheryl lives with her husband in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where she has been for the past 29 years. She has two grown children, ages 24 and 27, and a Great Pyrenees "granddog," Embry.

Writing is so much a part of her life that recently, she and long-time friend Livia Reasoner, decided to open a publishing house. Prairie Rose Publications furthers the western-themed writing offerings of women. As if that weren’t enough, there were so many requests for a publishing house for young people interested in the west that they decided to open the unique imprint, Painted Pony Books. This line will be open to all authors who have submissions for Middle Grade readers, Young Adult, and New Adult.

RTW: What intrigued you to write this story?

CP: My story, Found Hearts, is about a young woman who is forced to leave first her home in South Carolina, then the safety net of her aunt and uncle's home in Chicago. Her brother's excessive drinking and expenditures have put her into a situation she never dreamed she'd find herself in--penniless and at the mercy of others. The answer to her dilemma comes in the form of an advertisement in the paper from a man searching for a wife for himself, and a mother to his children.

I've always wondered about women who were mail-order brides. How hard it must have been to leave everything behind and go to a new place where everything was unfamiliar, not knowing anyone, and marrying a man who could be any kind of person--you wouldn't know until you got there. What circumstances could force a person into doing something so desperate? Any number of things! That's what makes a mail-order bride story so tantalizing.

About Found Hearts
Southern belle Evie Fremont has lost everything—except hope. When she answers an advertisement for marriage to Alex Cameron who lives in the wilds of Indian Territory, she has few illusions that he could be a man she might fall in love with—especially as his secrets begin to unfold.

Ex-Confederate soldier Alex Cameron needs a mother for his two young half-Cherokee sons more than he needs a wife—or so he tells himself. But when his past threatens his future on his wedding day, he and Evie are both forced to acknowledge their new love has come to stay—along with their Found Hearts.

Excerpt from Found Hearts
Her voice trembled at the end, and Alex reached for her, but she tried to push him away.
“Evie—” He grasped her shoulders and turned her toward him.
“I should slap your face!”
He gave a slight smile. “Just wait.”
“For what?”
“This.” He leaned toward her and pulled her tightly into his arms, his lips coming across hers with tender impatience. Evie stopped struggling as his mouth closed over hers in a gentle, yet firm melding that he kept tightly leashed.

RTW:  Oooh, what a teaser!  And what else do you have for us to read?

Trapped in Indian Territory in 1895 by a quirk of nature, high school teacher Jenni Dalton must find a way to get her seven students back to the 21st Century. Handsome U.S. Marshal Rafe d'Angelico seems like the answer to her prayers: he is, after all, an Angel. In a race against time and evil, Rafe has one chance to save Jenni's life and her soul from the Dark One – but can their love survive? 4.5 Stars (Highest Rating) from Romantic Times Cheryl Pierson's fresh, well-crafted novel pits some unlikely heroes against evil incarnate. The characters are vibrant and tell a story of courage in difficult circumstances. An open thread invites a sequel. —Donna M. Brown Romantic Times

How do you capture a cowboy's heart? Hearts and Spurs is a collection of nine stories by some of western romance’s best—just in time for Valentine's Day! Following up their Christmas collection Wishing for a Cowboy, these ladies have done it again with new stories of handsome cowboys and the women who captivate them in Hearts and Spurs.

The Widow's Heart by Linda Broday
Skye O’Rourke thinks her imagination is playing tricks on her when she sees a man emerge from the shimmering desert heat. No one would willingly take a stroll under the scorching sun with a saddle slung on his back. She’s shocked to discover it’s Cade Coltrain, a man she once gave her heart to only to have him give it back.

Can she trust him not to abandon her this time? Yet, trusting each other is the only way they can survive. And love might just save them if they believe…

Guarding Her Heart by Livia J. Washburn
Julia Courtland was on her way west to marry a man she had never met. Henry Everett, the marshal of Flat Rock, Texas, was the grandson of her uncle's best friend. It seemed like a good match for both of them, and the wedding was scheduled to take place on Valentine's Day.

Grant Stafford thought the young woman who got on the stagecoach at Buffalo Springs was the prettiest thing he had seen in a long time. She wasn't too friendly, mind you, but she was sure easy on the eyes. Not that Grant had time to worry much about such things. He was the shotgun guard on this run, but more than that, he was an undercover Texas Ranger on the trail of the vicious outlaw gang responsible for a string of stagecoach robberies.

Fate threw Julia Courtland and Grant Stafford together on a cold February day in West Texas, but it also threw deadly obstacles in their path. A runaway team, a terrible crash, and bullets flying through the air threaten to steal not only their lives but also any chance they have for happiness. If they're going to survive, they will have to learn to trust each other...and maybe steal their hearts back from fate.

At last ready to relinquish the temporary vows she never should have made, she begs the only man she trusts to collect her from a mission in the middle of nowhere.

When the ex-Ranger’s quest collides with the ex-nun’s plea in a burned-out border town, unexpected love blooms among shared memories of the dead man who was a brother to them both.

Too bad he was also the only man who could have warned them about the carnage to come.

  1. Cheryl, I loved Found Hearts! Mail order brides have always intrigued me. I'm sure some found the love of a lifetime but probably most ended up with a less-than-desirable husband they had to learn to tolerate. I've asked myself why a man would want to marry someone he'd never met. The biggest reason was probably needing someone to care for his children. Or maybe he was lonely. After all there were few women in the West. But, I'm sure there were a lot of other reasons. I feel a blog coming on! LOL Back to your story....Evie and Alex were great characters. You always write such fantastic stories. TIME PLAINS DRIFTER is one of my favorites.

    Wishing you much success!!

    1. Hi Linda! I'm so glad you enjoyed Found Hearts so much. I'm "wordy"--so it's hard to compress what I want to get across in a short story, but I'm getting better as I go along! LOL I'm like you--always wondered what would make a man send off for a "mail order bride" -- and what would make a woman answer that ad! I think it boils down to desperation of some kind for both of them. Yes, you need to write a blog about that, for sure! LOL I'm glad to hear Time Plains Drifter is one of your faves, too. It's one of mine, as well--I didn't intend to write it, but it demanded to be written! LOL Thanks for coming by and commenting, dear friend!

  2. And another patented Cheryl Pierson hotter-than-Hades hero bites the dust. With you on the job, Okie, the Old West is gonna run out of drool-worthy men along about next Tuesday. :-D

I always enjoy your stories, Cheryl. Watching Alex and Evie fall in love despite everything was a great ride. Can't wait for the next one. :-)

    1. Well, Kathleen, the good thing about writing fiction is that we can always dream up MORE "hotter-than-Hades" heroes to write about! LOL

I'm so glad you enjoyed this little tale of Evie and Alex. I think they're going to discover that they were meant for each other. Thanks for your kind words, Tex!

  3. I'm going to love this story, Cheryl. That little slip of excerpt made me chuckle and then sigh. Time Plains Drfter is one of my favorite stories. Okay, so I'm addicted to time travel stories, but this one was exceptional.
I am so happy to be part of this anthology and this group of comrades. It's such a thrill to be with like-minded authors.
All great things to your corner of the universe.
    PS
My sister had a Great Pyranese named Moon. He was a terrific dog and my dog (Golden Retriever), Kate loved him dearly. They died in the same year, but I will always remember what wonderful dogs they were. I know you love Embry like that, too.

    1. Sarah, we are SO glad you threw in with us at Prairie Rose Publications! And you'll soon have something with Painted Pony Books, too! YIPPEE!! It's always nice to find a group of writers that think the same way, and are supportive of one another, and that's what we try for at PRP. I'm so glad you enjoyed Time Plains Drifter so much, too.

Oh, I tell you, I don't know what we'd do without Embry. He is a constant source of enjoyment and entertainment for us. He is one of those dogs that is so loyal to the four of us that he's totally fierce when anyone else comes to the door, so he's a great watchdog, but he has to be taken outside before we can open the door to the pizza delivery man. LOL

Thanks for your continuing support, Sarah! I appreciate that so much.

    1. I know what you mean, Tanya. And you know, what I really loved about Alex and Evie was that Evie, even though she had no choice, was really not asking for much but got much more than she ever expected, and the same with Alex. Both of them were pleasantly surprised...which might not have happened all that much in reality! LOL
