Cowboys and Kittens and Flirting, Oh MY!

Yes, it's the Final Flirt-Off in

All you lovely people commented on Romancing The West yesterday and your generousity put me in the final round!  Thanks so much!  Also thank you to Amber Scott who organized this whole blog tour. Mwah!

Oh, my. <giggle>  Who would have thought little ol' me would end up in a flirt-off with two fine authors such as the splendid Regan Black and the marvelous Lacey Weatherford?

And now I have my hat and my lasso (see left) and I'm ready to find any lost little strays who might be in sorely need of a fun, romantic story.

Oh, well, it isn't lady-like to actually bribe someone into commenting on my blog, so instead, I'll just sweeten the pot a bit. Um more about that later. :)

Let's talk sexy cowboys.  Yesterday, I asked you to post the sexiest cowboy, and today, I'll show you a few of them.

King of Cowboys
John Wayne
Of course, lots of ladies love John Wayne.  Women the world over were jealous of Maureen O'Hara. <teehee>  He created an amazing larger-than-life character who exemplifed the Old West and all its chivalry.  Want to know more about that?  After you comment here, go to Your Need To Read and comment on my post, Cowboys: Knights of the Old West.
Yes, you get extra entries into the Prize Package for a YNTR comment!

Who can forget Rooster Cogburn?  I loved John Wayne in True Grit, so imagine my surprise when I liked Jeff Bridges just as well.  I didn't think that was possible!

Clint Eastwood
It seems like lots of ladies are loving another strong, silent type, and that would be The Man With No Name himself, Clint Eastwood.  Yeah baby, Rowdie Yates, the actor who was told he'd never make it because his adam's apple was too large, has passed 80 years of age and is still making ladies' hearts flutter.  He even has Paint Your Wagon fans!  I heard he absolutely hated singing in that movie and swore never to do it again.  And didn't.

Sam Elliot
The third most popular cowboy is Sam Elliot and the ladies picked him for his sexy voice as much as for his good looks.  Not that I would have noticed, you understand.  <Excuse me while I swoon.>  We in the Pacific Northwest call him one of our own because he graduated from high school in Portland, Oregon, and went to Clark College in Vancouver, and that's were he decided to become an actor.  Good choice.  I don't suppose you remember him in Conagher?  Or Tombstone?  <sigh>  Kathryn Ross is one lucky lady.

Tom Selleck
Actually, Sam was running neck and neck with another actor who stole hearts from Alaska to Down Under, and of course that would be Tom Selleck.  I loved The Sackets (he played Orrin Sackett, Sam Elliot played his brother), Monte Walsh, Quigley Down Under . . . Tom Selleck was born to ride astride, er, I mean, play a cowboy.

No plastic body for this man: "So I like to get outside and work on the farm, from fixing roads to clearing brush. I hate going to the gym, so sweating outdoors sure beats sitting on a stationary bike staring at my navel. And I work cheaper than anyone I could hire to do it."

Many of you received a coupon for a copy of Much Ado About Marshals at Smashwords.  Want a sneak peak of the book?  Here's a short video:

Like that sexy cowboy?  His name is Kyle Walker and he's not actually a cowboy--he's a construction worker.  I think he fills out those cowboy duds pretty well, though.

What famous actor do you think would best play the part of Cole Richards?  Make a comment and you'll get:
  • A free copy of Much Ado About Marshals (if you don't already have one)
  • A Bonus Entry for the Prize Package and don't forget you get another Bonus Entry for all comments made on my post at Your Need To Read
  • A $10 Amazon gift Certificate (this post's entries only)
For added discussion, what actress do you think could best portray Daisy?

We have all weekend so take your time and think about it.  After you make your comment, be sure to check out the Indie Book Collective where you can STILL get FREE BOOKS!  Yes, the other Menage-a-Blog authors are generously giving away books all week, so please go to their websites and show them some love.

The Menage-a-Blog Tour ends Midnight Eastern Time (9pm Pacific Time) on Sunday night, July 24, 2011.  Thanks so much for visiting!  Take a little sugar with you. :)

  1. I love, love, love my cowboys and men of the Old West! The love of my life is Sam Elliott : )Sam has no peer as a Western star. Also, his voice alone would make all the seams come loose in your clothes! One of my favorite words is “courtly”, which to me means respectful and mannerly. Who could resist a courtly cowboy, hat in hand, when he says “thank you, Ma’am”? A lady journalist who was once lucky enough to interview Sam Elliott described him as “courtly”. I knew that : ) Tom Selleck makes a mighty fine man of the West. He and Sam Elliott are great friends and costarred in two great movies based on Louis L'Lamour stories: "The Sacketts" and "The Shadow Riders". Tom Selleck was recently inducted into the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum for his work in Western films.

Tim Daly. "The Outsider". Tim Daly. I have watched this movie more times than I can count, and it hasn't cooled down yet. Tim Daly : )

Gary Cooper. Grace Kelly. "High Noon". The wonderful theme song sung by Tex Ritter:

Robert Fuller & Robert Horton; James Drury & Doug Mcclure (from “The Virginian”); Peter Breck, Lee Majors, Richard Long (the Barkley brothers from “The Big Valley); The Cartwrights–especially Guy Williams as cousin Will Cartwright (he also had the title role as TV’s Zorro and Professor John Robinson in “Lost in Space”); James Garner as “Maverick” or just James Garner; James Arness, Ken Curtis, Dennis Weaver from “Gunsmoke”; Clint Walker as “Cheyenne”; Lee Horsley from “Paradise”. Robert Conrad in “The Wild, Wild West”–the original “steampunk”! I love them all, and there are just too many more to mention.

However, one of the greatest TV Men of the West was Stuart Whitman as Marshal Jim Crown in “Cimarron Strip”. In my opinion, this is one of the best westerns ever put on the screen. The episodes which pitted Stuart Whitman against Richard Boone, whose character called Marshall Crown by the name “Tricky Jim” were outstanding! If you can ever find a sexier lawman than Stuart Whitman, please let me know! Those looks, those eyes, that strut and that voice!

Richard Boone--"Paladin"! We lived in Nevada when I was in the first grade, and my mother worked in a gift shop. She met lots of celebrities, including Richard Boone. I still have the calling card with the identifying graphic of the chess piece for the “Have Gun— Will Travel” series. Mr. Boone autographed it for Mom! He was extremely masculine, compelling and charming! He was an excellent actor, very serious about his craft.

I also adore John Wayne. Not a perfect man, but my goodness, what a man! From what I’ve seen, read, and heard from his films, and articles and interviews, he was the real deal. I love his older, iconic cowboy image. The scene from True Grit where he takes the horses reins in his mouth, and charges forward, blasting away with two pistols is forever burned in my brain. If you watch John Wayne in his early films, you will see a very sexy, charming, “look ‘em in the eye” kind of guy. What a physique! If he focused his undivided attention on a woman, I think she would have been in big, big trouble! No wonder they called him “Duke” : )

Anyway, I vote for someone younger to play the roles... like Dakota Fanning and Hailee Steinfeld to be Daisy and her friend, and maybe Chace Crawford as Cole, since he was born in Texas!! LOL

  22. Congrats, Jacquie! My all time favorite western is Lonesome Dove but I couldn't really see any of those boys playing Cole. So, i went to my second fave western movie, American Outlaws, which I think either of the brothers (Colin Farrell or Gabriel Machet) would be perfect for Cole's part :) Don't worry about the book, I already have a copy.

  25. How fun! Congrats, Jacquie. I like my cowboys with a healthy dose of good looks and humor. How about Owen Wilson? Remember him in Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights? Another favorite of mine is Timothy Olyphant. Watch him in Justified these days. He was in Deadwood before. He wears that cowboy hat mighty fine, if I do say so myself. Melts my butter every time he shows up on screen. Diana

  28. Your book trailer is cute, I loved it!

For Cole, if you want to camp it up a little, Johnny Depp would be fun. Or a little more serious, David Boreanz might be interesting.

Daisy... All I could think of was Emma Stone, the feel I get of the character is earnestness, which Emma had a lot of in Easy A and House Bunny.

  46. Okay, now that you mention it, Sam Elliott, John Wayne, Stuart Whitman -- all iconic in their own right. The funny thing is, I don't think of cowboys when I look at 'em. Sam Elliott was the better General "Thunderbolt" Ross in the Hulk movies, John Wayne was amazing in The Quiet Man and Donovan's Reef, and Stuart Whitman was a template for a true-blue, stalwart man in one of my first books. But because I didn't grow up with cowboys, I don't think of them that way -- just real manly men!

  70. I had to come back and comment about "Gimmee Timmee" and "JUSTIFIED"!!!

The first season of Justified was fabulous! The second season was sensational : ) It will be a seemingly endless wait until the start of season three! This show has it all: a compelling story line that could take place in any era in history, well-etched, compelling characters, a wonderful leading man and a faultless ensemble cast, and always a surprise or two! One of my favorite aspects of Justified is that the women are every bit as fallible, ferocious, and fascinating as the men. Awesome!

Timothy Olyphant fits the character of Raylan Givens the way that Raylan’s Stetson fits his head! Perfectly! I must say that Timothy looks mighty fine in that hat, and he wears the hat, it doesn’t wear him. “Justified” is just about perfect in every way–an outstanding cast and astounding writing and overall production values. Dark, gritty, and impossible to look away from! Raylan is a dedicated lawman, a deadly crack shot, and his own worst enemy. Bad boys are naughty with a touch of irresistible sweetness. There is something about them, even though you may try to remain proper, that makes you want to show your own naughty self : ) They certainly won’t reproach you for letting down your hair and giving in to temptation! Bad boys are just as delicious and delectable as that last piece of chocolate fudge cake that you devour in the dark on a midnight kitchen raid!

    Good morning Jacquie,

Congratulations on making it to the Final Flirt. I knew you could do it. Anyone who has the passion for Cowboys the way you do is going all the way to the top!

As far as who will make a good Cole. I'm going to still have to say Sam Elliot. That sexy smile and sexy voice that is so distinctive. I know his voice with my eyes shut. When he smiles a woman can lose her heart and swoon. Him and Tom Selleck are such gorgeous men. And he and Tom can wear a pair of tight jeans in front of me anyday, lol.

As far as leading ladies. I think Rene Zilwinger would make a good Daisy. Remember her as Ruby in Cold Mountain? Or possibly Nicole Kidman.

  87. Sharon, good to see you back here! I know what you mean, and even though I like paranormal and fantasy (I write fantasy romance as well), the market is flooded with them. Sometimes you just want another choice.

  90. Taylor Lee, what a wonderful review you posted on Amazon and Smashwords. Thanks for the 5 stars and the support!

  98. Congrats on making the final 3. Cowboys are so hot. They sure know how to ride a filly...lol
I'm not good at placing actors in the roles of books heroes and heroines because no one ever measures up to what the characters look and act like in my mind.
I have my copy of your book, so just enter me in for the rest of the contest. TY

  101. Shannon, I've never seen Matt Bomer in a cowboy hat and chaps, but I bet he'd look mighty fine.

  102. Crystal R, Piper Perabo is a doll--she would make a good Daisy. :) You'll get your free book shortly!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Meg, okay, NO Justin Bieber. He has enough to do anyway. LOL Shia LaBeouf is interesting. I thought he did a good job in the last Indy film.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Elizabeth, yes, I'm sort of sagging right about now. Good thing I have my husband to help out. :) I love westerns, too, even if they'r not trendy at the moment. Or decade.

    ReplyDelete
  105. tweezle, you're the second one to vote for Matt Bomer. I haven't seen him as a cowboy but I think he could wear the duds pretty well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  106. Thanks so much for all your nice comments, Denise, Z! For you, Jake and Katie it is. I do think they'd make a cute couple. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  107. Eilis, manly men--that's what my article is about at Your Need To Read. And you're right, these actors played many roles other than cowboys. Tom Selleck hasn't played a cowboy that often, even though that's how I think of him.

    ReplyDelete
  108. hotcha12, please send your email address to jacquierogers@gmail.com for a copy of Much Ado About Marshals. I can't enter you in the contest unless I have your email address.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Too many to choose from but I love a classic Clint Eastwood in a cowboy hat and boots! Tom Selleck would be sweet too. And Viggo is nice fit too.

  114. Wendy K, Kiefer Sutherland got a few votes yesterday, too. Has he played a cowboy in other movies? I can't think of any. Hope you enjoy the book!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Judith, thanks for stopping by! I must be getting old because to me, Orlando Bloom is just now getting sexy. Then again, even when I was a teen, I preferred the thirty-somethings to the teen idols.

  128. Teresa K, thanks for your persistance. :) I'm with you about Sam and Tom. We have to arm wrestle with Marion, though, because I think she dibs'd them both. LOL Renée Zellweger? She can play anything. Amazing actress.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Blackroze37, I hope you're right!!! Have you read the book yet?

    ReplyDelete
  131. Kat, I think several ladies are fighting over Sam and Tom now. John Wayne better watch out or they'll knock him out of first place!

    ReplyDelete
  132. Michelle, actually I have the same problem. No character, no setting, no situation can ever be as vivid or pure on screen as in my mind. I think that's why I'm addicted to the book method of telling stories instead of movies--although I love movies, too. Given the choice of a book or movie, I'll nearly always take the book.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Chelsea, until recently, we haven't had that many westerns to read, especially western historical romance. Contemporary does a little better because Harlequin publishes them. I'm hoping with the current publishing climate we'll have a whole lot more western historical romance to read. :)

    ReplyDelete
  134. Hahaha, Laurie. You want ALL the cowboys! I think the other ladies will want you to share. I hope you enjoy Much Ado About Marshals!

For Cole I would say the best man to play him would be: Chris Evans

For Daisy I would say Ann Hathaway

  150. Books and Bane, no problem. :) I'm sure when you read Much Ado About Marshals you'll come up with your own idea of who should play Daisy and Cole.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Mercedes, Lou Diamond Phillips lit a lot of girls' hearts on fire! Drew Barrymore is cool and does have the right personality for Daisy.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Yana, hmmmm, Daniel Radcliffe. I'm not really seeing much Harry Potter in Cole. LOL. But Radcliffe is a talented actor so with some elevator shoes and some voice coaching, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he pulled it off.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Jaime, thanks! Your book will be on its way shortly.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Babs, Chris Evans as Cole, I think you're onto something there. He's definitely droolworthy. And Daisy does look a whole lot like Ann Hathaway!

    ReplyDelete
  155. shadow_kohler, oh yeah, another Sam Elliot fan. We could form our own fan club right here on RTW! I hope you enjoy Much Ado About Marshals!

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hi, Patty! Timothy Olyphant sure looks nice in a Stetson, all right. :) Your book will be on its way shortly.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Robin, three cheers for the POTC crew! But then who would play Bosco? Maybe those two English sailors. :)

    ReplyDelete
  158. ohyeahiwon, Sam is really gaining ground!

I can't send you a book, though, until you send me your address. jacquierogers@gmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  159. Karen, just the idea of Tom Selleck and wine in the same sentence is enough to set all quivering. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  160. Sunny, you're right, Clint's eyes say it all. Soooo expressive. Your book is on its way!

    ReplyDelete
  161. Meg, LOL. Okay, okay, you can have Viggo! Stand back, ladies. Viggo can take care of himself.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Jane, you're the first to mention Lorne Green, and what a handsome man he was! Yes, the buckskin made all the difference. :)

    ReplyDelete
  163. Joanie, you're doing just fine! And you'll be entered into the drawings. Your book will be on its way after I get all the messages answered, so an hour or so.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Silvia, I asked around and finally found your email address. That's why you didn't get the book--no email addy. But you'll get it soon now!

    ReplyDelete
  165. I'm all on board for Hugh Jackman(movie-Australia), sexiest guy ever to sit on a horse. Of course, my husband laughs at me because I'll watch anything Hugh Jackman is in, he's so sexy! (just watch him in Wolverine, his muscles had muscles!)

  166. almost forgot Daisy! I see Kelly MacDonald (was in Nanny McFee & Boardwalk Empire on HBO)as a perfect candidate for Daily. Also saw someone else's suggestion of Jake Gyllanhaal, he is a great nominee!

    ReplyDelete
  167. I just saw that in your earlier post the menage-a-blog one of the prizes is a kindle. I love my kindle! Best & worst purchase I've made. I spend so much more money on books now! Our new puppy got ahold of mine, thank goodness it was in it's neoprene sleeve, which saved it from total ruin. It does have some new decorative teeth marks though. I'm just glad it still works! Am I too late for that contest?

  169. Hugh Jackman is the perfect guy for the job or that guy in the movie Thor. Best 2 minutes in a film. Ever.

Cute little kitty. So so cute. Hmm. What did you say something about Daisy? Hmm sorry busy thinking about Hugh and cute little pussies (oh my too far).

    ReplyDelete
  170. OOOH, I forgot about Hugh!! Hmmmmm. Let's do a cowboy ride-off between Hugh Jackman, Viggo Mortenson and Tom Selleck... There goes Tom, roping and romping around the paddock, Viggo jumps the fence on his Indian pony Hidalgo, while Hugh whistles for his Aussie horse and swings those sexy legs over the saddle with a come-hither wink and grin. Oh man. Can't decide which would be better for a tumble in the hay.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Janet, I have to agree with you about Hugh Jackman--oh, he made a fine, fine cowboy in Australia. Then again, there's just no way to make that man look bad. Whew, baby! The kindle portion of the contest is over but if you commented on one of the other authors' blogs earlier this week, you're good to go. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  172. Elizabeth, thanks. Regan and Lacey are burning up the place, but I'm doing my best to hang in there. What a fun bunch of authors in the Menage-a-Blog tour! It has been a great experience.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Venyel, you'll have to arm wrestle Janet for Hugh Jackman. But Chris Hemsworth is not a bad consolation prize. LOL Daisy? Who's that? Oh yeah, the heroine. We do get rather caught up in our heroes, don't we? Speaking of which, Much Ado About Marshals will be on its way to you shortly. Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  174. Paty, thanks for stopping by! Everyone--check out Paty's posts here at RTW last week. She's a talented author. :)

  177. Jacquie, I love your site - Romancing the West - it certainly captures the imagination and rekindles lots of memories of travelling through cowboy country. I am looking forward to reading your book, Much Ado about Marshals. Until then it is a bit tricky to suggest a famous actor... but.. judging by the cover I think that Hugh Jackman would be a top choice. Johnny Dep would be a close second. Congrats on making it to the final round!

Jacquie, I love your site - Romancing the West - it takes me back to travels through the south west and the beauty and wildness there. I am looking forward to reading Much Ado About Marshals. Until then it is a bit tricky to comment on a lead actor - but judging by the book cover, Hugh Jackman would be a top pick. Johnny Dep a close second. Congrats on making it to the final round!
